Empty spool weights are the missing number in the most useful trick in 3D printing: weigh a spool, subtract the empty spool weight, and you know exactly how much filament is left. This page is a quick reference for the brands makers actually buy.
Reference table
| Brand | Spool type | Approx. empty weight |
|---|---|---|
| Bambu Lab | Reusable plastic spool | ~250 g |
| Bambu Lab | Refill | Filament coil only — wind onto the reusable spool and use its weight |
| Prusament | Plastic spool | ~200 g |
| eSUN | Plastic spool | ~210–265 g (varies by generation) |
| Hatchbox | Plastic spool | ~225–260 g |
| Inland | Plastic spool | ~225–255 g |
| Overture | Cardboard spool | ~135–145 g |
| Polymaker | Cardboard spool | ~135–145 g |
| Elegoo | Cardboard spool | ~125–140 g |
| Sunlu | Plastic spool | ~120–150 g (varies by line) |
Two patterns worth knowing: cardboard spools cluster around 120–150 g and plastic spools around 200–265 g. If your brand isn't listed, those ranges plus a look at the spool material get you close — but weighing an empty is the only way to be sure.
How to use these numbers
- Put the whole spool on a kitchen scale. Example: a part-used spool of Overture PLA reads 612 g.
- Subtract the empty weight from the table: 612 − 140 = ~472 g of filament remaining.
- Compare against your slicer's estimate for the next print. The full decision process is in the remaining-filament guide.
Why weights vary so much
Brands redesign spools to cut shipping weight, switch between plastic and cardboard for recyclability, and use different spool sizes for different filament weights (a 1 kg spool and a 250 g sample spool share nothing). Even "the same" spool can change between purchases a year apart. That's why a static table — this one included — is a starting point rather than gospel.
Or skip the lookup entirely
This table is a public sample of the catalog inside SpoolVault. The app ships with brand-specific spool weights preloaded — pick the brand when you add a spool, type in the total weight from your scale, and remaining filament is calculated for you. Custom spool weights are supported too, for the brands only you seem to buy.
